This
candid picture of Bella and her foal, Chewy was taken by contributing
editor of PhotoLife magazine, Peter Burian, and truly captures the love
and protectiveness of mother for her baby. It was taken from the road
and generously made available to me by Peter. Also taken by Peter is the
one below.

As I read, A Donkey in
the Meadow by Derek Tangye, I recall his saying that donkeys are
Biblical creatures with the cross on their back. When I enter the
barn to say good night to mine I am reminded of this passage from
the book: Derek, the author, and his wife, Jeannie are going into
the barn on a Christmas eve to share mincemeat pies with their
donkeys. Donkeys that have given them so many headaches because of
their antics and so much pleasure. : "There was a gentle sound as
they shifted their feet on the cobblestones, and I was aware too of
the musty scent of their coats. Ageless simplicity, laughed at,
beaten, obstinately maintaining their individuality; here indeed was
a moment when there was a communication with the past. Struggle,
self sacrifice, integrity, loyalty; how was it that the basic
virtues, the proven talisman of man's true happiness, was being lost
in the rush of material progress?" |
